So far, Chief has an interesting relaionship with birds. He uses his memory of hunting birds with his father as a method to get away from the madness of the ward and a way to escape his fears.
The flashback Chief has about hunting with his father portrays the bird hiding. As long as the bird remains still he will be fine but as the dog gets closer and closer it becomes harder and harder until the bird finally flies out and is shot. This could explain why Chief acts like he is deaf as a method of hiding to remain safe. But maybe it is becoming harder to keep his vow of silence. He hopes that he can remain strong because if he doesn't he will be "shot"by Nurse Ratched.
